Chapter 32

LOLA

Jason offering to return with me filled me with a multitude of emotions. Things had unravelled so quickly between us but I relished it. It only confirmed what we were both feeling and neither one of us had forced the matter. Everything flowed naturally between us and I was enjoying the company as well as the exquisite sex. He made me feel safe whenever he was close; like he would protect me and CJ at all costs.

We pulled up outside my house, it was coming up to lunchtime and lack of sustenance had my stomach grumbling loudly. Jason pulled me out of the car swiftly, taking me in his arms with a big smile on his face. I was quickly recognising it as one he saved for only my eyes, like he was revealing his true happiness. It was deeply vulnerable yet held so much strength. He planted a kiss on my lips, firm but soft, controlling all the previous passions we had experienced at bay. I was beginning to harbour emotions for this drowning sea of a man. His embrace being the only thing to keep me grounded and on planet earth.

“Mummy! JC!” CJ came running down the steps to the house, wrapping his arms around my legs. He quickly let go, making a beeline for Jason who swiftly caught his advance and swung him around in the air.

“Hey buddy,” Jason beamed up at CJ as he held him above his head. Fits of giggles erupted from CJ as Jason caught him in the ribs and proceeded to tickle him. The sound was beautiful, two boys enjoying each other's company.

“Lola, I…” Hilda stalked down the steps, stopping mid sentence as her focus switched between Jason and I. “Mr Carter.” She nodded in acknowledgment.

I could feel the disapproval radiating off of her as she spat his name. I wanted to know what her problem was, why she had such an issue with Jason but I refrained from asking.

“Grandma, can we go to the fayre now?” CJ all but screamed in excitement.

“You will have to ask your mum, dear. I need to head home.”

“Are you sure?” I asked, I was hoping if she had agreed to stay for dinner that maybe the tension between her and Jason would dissolve.

“Yes, dear. But you enjoy the fayre.” She swung her bag over her shoulder and edged past us, making her way to her car without a second glance.

“I don’t think grandma likes me,” Jason joked with CJ, giving him a squeeze in his arms. CJ let out another giggle before asking again if I could take him to the fayre.

We headed inside, I was still in scruffy clothes that I was silently cursing Bri for bringing. Knowing she had probably grabbed the first things she found, I couldn’t really be mad at her. I definitely needed to update my wardrobe, I knew that much.

“Sure sweetheart, I just need to change.”

“JC are you coming too?” He asked eagerly. Jason glanced over at me for an answer that I was sure he already knew.
